Villagers North Of Kyiv Estimate They Are Only Still Finding Body Parts Two Months After The Russian Army Left.

0

Neighbors in villages east of Kiev’s capital have reported finding their neighbors buried in shallow graves for more than a month following Russian soldiers’ forced withdrawal from that area.

“Sometimes, I have nightmares and can’t sleep at night,” Serhiy Yudenko told CNN’s Matthew Chance. “I pray they won’t ever come back.” Yudenko said he was shot by Russian soldiers and left for dead. He now has scars from the bullets but says the emotional scars run deeper.

He said that he would never forgive the Russians for what they had done.

More than three hundred people are still missing from the region, according to Ukrainian officials. Deputy Interior Minister Yevhen Yenin told reporters that every time searchers find a new body, he thinks of the families of the deceased.

Standing next to the grave, Yenin said, “You cannot imagine the eyes of mothers whose children they lost. You cannot imagine the eyes of relatives whose beloved have been captured or have been killed on the front line.”

Rocket Systems Capable Of Hitting Targets At A Distance Of Approximately 50 Miles Apart Will Be Provided By The United Kingdom To Ukraine.

0

A United Kingdom rocket will be launched from multiple locations in Britain in the Western Atlantic Ocean on toward Ukraine. Such a rocket is part of the British military strategy meant to defend against Russia’s aggression.

Britain will send M270 launchers able to strike targets up to 80 kilometers (49.7 miles) away, according to a statement from the British Foreign Office. The move has been coordinated closely with the United States decision to provide Ukraine with its High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) – a variant of the multiple-launch rocket systems that will be gifted by the UK, according to the statement.

“The UK has taken a leading role in supplying Ukraine’s heroic troops with the vital equipment they need to defend their country,” said British Defense Minister Gavin Williamson. “As Russian tactics change, so must our support to Ukraine. These highly capable multiple-launch rocket systems will enable our Ukrainian friends to better protect themselves against Russia’s brutal use of long-range artillery, which Putin’s forces have used indiscriminately to flatten cities,” he added.

The British government also said that Ukrainian troops will be trained on how to use the launchers, who will be deployed in the UK. The effectiveness of the launchers will be maximized during their deployment.

More Of UNICEF’s Available Infant Formula Is Expected To Enter The United States Next Week As The Baby Formula Shortage Persists.

The US government’s Operation Fly Formula program will see infant milk powder from overseas hit the US market in the coming weeks, which will be used by more than 200,000 infants each week.

Infant formula will soon be available to parents in the United States. However, shelves remain empty due to supply chain issues and product recalls. The White House announced Wednesday that it will ship 2 million cans of Kendamil infant formula from the United Kingdom, beginning June 9. This shipment includes about 3.2 million bottles worth of Kendamil Organic Stage 1 infant formula and 540,000 bottles worth of Kendamil Classic Stage 1 infant formula.

The Kendamil formula will be distributed through US retailers in stores and online. The first shipment will be available at Target stores in the coming weeks, according to the White House. Additionally, an Australian formula manufacturer expects to ship about 250,000 cans to US stores next week in two planeloads. Bubs Australia CEO Kristy Carr said that flights of baby formula will take off from Australia on June 9 and June 11 and will arrive in Pennsylvania and California respectively. The flights will include the equivalent of about 4.6 million 8-ounce bottles each.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Joe Carr, owner of American-made shoes company US Shoe, said that he hopes at least some retail stores will have his products within days of landing. The retailers are equally eager to work with him and U.S. President Joe Biden’s task force to see this happen.

Last weekend, Nestle sent more than 38,000 cans of Gerber Good Start Extensive HA formula to one retailer, but the company would not name the retailer or say whether it was available for purchase. The company also refused to disclose how many cans of the formula remain in their possession.

CNN found the product on Walmart’s website and on Gerber’s website, but it was unclear how much of the product was available. In a statement to CNN, Tarun Malkani, CEO of Gerber, said his company is among executives from five infant formula companies to meet with President Biden on Wednesday afternoon to discuss their progress on ramping up the supply of formula for the US.

“We want to make sure we have coverage right across the country. We’re going to be prioritizing the areas that are in most need and vulnerable communities,” Carr said. Bubs plans to send another approximately 250,000 cans in two more planeloads in “a week or a few weeks,” Carr said.

The company plans to send another 750,000 cans of formula in the coming weeks and months, for a total of 1.25 million cans of six types of formula for children through 1 year of age, she said.

Carr’s comments provide a comprehensive overview of the initiatives being taken by retailers, industry, and government to assist American families during this economic crisis. Carr says that all these entities have focused on speed to market, with the goal of supporting American families who are struggling financially.

Abbott Nutrition said last week that it plans to restart work at its Sturgis, Michigan, plant on June 4, months after it was shut down. During inspections that spanned January, February and March, US Food and Drug Administration investigators found Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria in several areas inside the plant, and several types of formula were recalled.

The company is expected to resume operations in June, and the first batches of its new formula are expected to be available around June 20. The plant will start with specialty metabolic formulas, with other kinds to come later. For now, parents are still struggling to find formula. Datasembly , a firm tracking market trends, reported that 70% of formula products were out of stock at some point during the week ending May 22. The estimates found stock rates to be worse than the week before.

Two national chain stores reported no improvement in formula stocks as of Tuesday, CNN reports. CVS spokesman Matt Blanchette told CNN that “our situation has not changed” since last week, and an executive of a supermarket chain in New England said it could be several months before there is any change to the supply in infant formula on store shelves.

According to Robert Rybick, president and CEO of Geissler’s Supermarkets, which has seven locations in Connecticut and Massachusetts: “With the delay in reopening the Abbott Sturgis plant, we hear it will be six to eight weeks; however, when filling the pipeline, especially with the current labor situation and trucking issues, we know that it’s likely to be three or four months before we get back to more regular stock conditions.”

According to a Nestlé spokesperson, most of the company’s shipments under Operation Fly Formula last week went to hospitals, home care companies and WIC programs. The spokesperson did not say whether the product had arrived at the destinations.

Returning After An Absence Of Several Years, Madonna Surprised The Guests At The Graduation Show.

On Tuesday, singer Madonna and musician FKA Twigs were spotted at the Central Saint Martins (CSM) undergraduate fashion show. The prestigious art school—known for producing renowned designers Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Stella McCartney and Phoebe Philo—held its annual show in London’s Kings Cross area, where students exhibited their graduate collections to a crowd of friends, family, buyers and fashion editors.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, Madonna arrived at the Met Gala on May 2 in a studded leather jacket by Moschino and a boombox-shaped bag by Midnight Studios. FKA Twigs embodied cyberpunk chic in a pair of spiral, serpent printed hoops by independent jewelers Panconesi and dystopian Gareth Pugh platform lace-up boots.

At the fashion show, political and futuristic designs were displayed. One designer sent 3D QR codes down the catwalk; when scanned, these codes took viewers to an Instagram filter containing renders of the designs. Another look included a transparent pregnant stomach.

L’Oréal Professionnel, a partner of Central Saint Martins for more than 20 years, once again awarded three students with the Young Talent Award. The award grants cash prizes to designers who graduated from the Bachelor course Womenswear and Menswear, Accessories and Footwear. Previous winners include Grace Wales Bonner and Richard Quinn. This year’s grand prize was awarded to knitwear designer Alice Morell Evans for her sculptural crochet pieces. Runners up included womenswear designer Emil Dernbach and Fashion Design and Marketing graduate Diana Sträng.

In addition to the fact that FKA Twigs and Madonna both have a pre-existing relationship with Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Rocco Ritchie (Madonna’s son) currently studies Fine Art at CSM. Also in 2019, FKA Twigs performed on Jools Holland wearing a wet look dress designed by Dimitri Petsa, a recent graduate from CSM. This year, she enlisted the help of final year fashion student, Yasmin Whitlock, to create some of the props used in her most recent mixtape video “CAPRISONGS.”

Johnny Depp Won A Legal Battle Over Defamation With Amber Heard.

Two accused actors were found liable for defamation by a court. They were awarded significantly more damages to Depp, who is a legal professional for them.

Actor Johnny Depp sued actress Amber Heard, his ex-wife, for defamation over a 2018 Washington Post op-ed in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Depp claims the article cost him lucrative acting roles. Heard countersued her ex-husband for defamation over statements Depp’s attorney made about her abuse claims. A jury found that Heard defamed Depp in three separate statements in The Washington Post piece, and that Depp defamed Heard with one statement his attorney made.

In the Depp v. Heard case, a jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. The jury awarded Heard $2 million in compensatory damages and no money for punitive damages. Depp sought $50 million in damages, while Heard sought $100 million. Punitive damages in Virginia are capped at $350,000, so the judge reduced the punitive damages award to that amount.

According to CNN Legal Analyst Joey Jackson, the verdict is a “tremendous” legal win for actor Johnny Depp and a repudiation for Amber Heard, who was sued by Depp over a column written by The Washington Post’s Roxanne Gay. “It’s a tremendous victory,” Jackson said. “What he had to overcome was a First Amendment issue which is that we all have the right to express our thoughts and opinions. What they (the jurors) said was that, yeah, you do have a First Amendment right unless you say something that is false that injures someone’s reputation and causes damages to them in their industry.” David Shane, a spokesman for Heard, said she plans to appeal the verdict.

Depp and Heard react to the verdict

Heard kept her eyes down in the courtroom as the verdict was read. Depp was not present in the court room. In a statement he released on his website and social media accounts, he said, “The jury gave me my life back.” The actor said, “From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome. Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me,” he said. He concluded by saying, “I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that.”

On Wednesday, Depp’s attorneys thanked the jury and said it was time to move on. “We are grateful to the jury for their careful deliberation, to the judge and court staff who have devoted an enormous amount of time and resources towards this case,” attorney Camille Vasquez told reporters outside court. Heard said in a statement she was “heartbroken” over the verdict.

“The disappointment I feel today is beyond words,” Amber Heard said during a statement Friday. “I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband.” Heard is best known for her roles in films such as “Friday Night Lights” and “Pineapple Express”; she and Depp met on the set of their film “The Rum Diary” in 2009 before marrying in 2015. They divorced in 2016.

The trial

Heard’s testimony involved accusations of physical and verbal abuse by Depp. Depp claimed on the stand that he has never struck a woman, denied Heard’s allegations of sexual battery and called himself a victim of domestic abuse by Heard, which she denies.

The pair’s relationship was highlighted in a California court during the trial, which began on April 13, 2017. Depp and Heard’s attorneys presented witnesses with photographs, audio and video recordings to make their cases. One expert, Laurel Anderson, a clinical psychologist who worked with Depp and Heard in 2015 as their marriage counselor, said in testimony played on April 14 that the pair’s relationship had what she characterized as “mutual abuse.”During the trial, Depp’s team presented witnesses that included model Kate Moss (with whom he had a relationship previously), and Walter Hamada (the head of DC Films). Actress Ellen Barkin and a number of former Depp associates testified on Heard’s behalf. Heard had notably fewer vocal supporters than Depp in the entertainment business and in and around the courthouse.

Sheryl Sandberg Decided To Step Down As COO Of Facebook-Parent Over Two Years After Its Creation.

Sheryl Sandberg, who served as COO of Facebook-parent Meta, announced her resignation from the company on Wednesday.

In a Facebook post, Sandberg did not disclose the reason for her departure from the company, which will take place in the fall of 2019. Sandberg said she plans to focus on her philanthropic work going forward, having worked for the company for 14 years.

In the early days of social media, the debate was much different than it is today. To say that it has not always been easy would be an understatement. But it should be hard. The products we make have a huge impact, so we have the responsibility to build them in a way that protects privacy and keeps people safe.”

Sandberg will remain on Meta’s board of directors after announcing that she will step down as the company’s COO, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post. Olivan, the company’s Chief Growth Officer, will become its next COO; however, his role will be “different from what Sheryl has done” and “a more traditional COO role,” Zuckerberg added.

In response to a question about the integration of product and business groups at the company, the CEO said “I think Meta has reached the point where it makes sense for our product and business groups to be more closely integrated, rather than having all the business and operations functions organized separately from our products.”

End of an era after a long partnership

Sandberg joined Facebook in March 2008. At the time, she was a high-profile figure in the tech industry, having been Google’s vice president of global online sales and operations. Prior to Google, she had held senior roles at the World Bank and the Treasury Department under President Bill Clinton. In those early years at Facebook, she was often referred to as the adult supervision for a company run by a very young founder.

In his post, Zuckerberg told about growing Facebook into the business it is today. “In 2008, when Sheryl joined me, I was 23 years old,” he said. “We’d built a great product — the Facebook website — but we didn’t yet have a profitable business and we were struggling to transition from a small startup to a real organization.”

Sandberg helped grow Facebook’s revenue from roughly $150 million in 2007 to more than $3.7 billion in 2011, the year before it went public. In partnership with Zuckerberg, Sandberg also helped grow Facebook’s revenue from roughly $150 million in 2007 to more than $3.7 billion in 2011. Her reputation as one of the most influential women in tech was burnished by her work launching the Lean In movement. That reputation was burnished by her work launching the Lean In movement for women to succeed and achieve their goals.

In a post on Facebook, Zuckerberg described Sheryl Sandberg as the architect of the social networking site’s advertising business, who hired great people and forged its management culture. He added that she had created opportunities for millions of people around the world.

But as Facebook shifted from being one of Silicon Valley’s most exciting new ventures to being a scandal-prone organization accused of everything from undermining democracy to abetting genocide, Sandberg faced growing challenges from policymakers and the public alike on misinformation, allegations of political bias, and looming government regulation—forcing her to answer questions she may not have foreseen when she first agreed to join the company.

To help manage the public policy aspects of Facebook’s business, the company hired Nick Clegg as head of global affairs in 2018. While the former UK deputy prime minister reported to Sandberg, she also relieved Sandberg of a portion of her portfolio and reduced her profile—a move that highlighted growing rifts between Sandberg and Zuckerberg during the Trump administration and widened over time, according to a 2021 report by the New York Times. Facebook disputed the characterization of their relationship in that article.

For years, rumors have circulated that Sandberg would leave Facebook. In 2018, Zuckerberg said Sandberg wasn’t going anywhere and noted that he hoped “we work together for decades more to come.”

In a post on Wednesday, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said: “It’s unusual for a business partnership like ours to last so long. I think ours did because Sheryl is such an amazing person, leader, partner, and friend.”

Fila, The Global Athletic-Wear Brand, Opened A Hotel In Shanghai.

0

FILA, the sportswear company, has announced plans to open a branded hotel in Shanghai in 2024.

The athletic wear company founded in Italy is partnering with Hyatt Hotels to develop the lifestyle hotel concept Fila House.

The JdV by Hyatt brand will open its first hotel in Shanghai’s Pudong district next month, marking the beginning of a new era for Fila. The luxury hotel will reflect the company’s history, culture, products and fashion trends in an immersive way, CEO Brian Yiu said in an August 29 press release.

Hyatt’s JdV brand stands for joy de vivre, which is French for “joy of living.” The JdV collection is a group of independently owned hotels that Hyatt manages and markets. These hotels are aimed at younger consumers and are known for being dog-friendly.

There are also hotels belonging to the JdV chain in Rome, Chicago and Toronto.

Fila House will be located at West Hongqiao Business District in Shanghai. It won’t be the first JdV property in China, though — that honor goes to the BEI Zhaolong Hotel in Beijing.

Until now, there has been no word on what the hotel’s interiors will look like. However, it is a safe bet that they will reflect Fila trademarks such as logos and red and navy blue.

The hotel scene in Shanghai has expanded rapidly in the past decade.

The J Hotel, located in the upper floors of the Shanghai Tower skyscraper and recognized for two achievements since opening last summer — first, as the world’s highest hotel, then for having the world’s highest restaurant inside a building — is drawing attention.

The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, located 20 miles southwest of the city center, is an “earthscraper” – a hotel built inside a quarry. Sixteen of its 18 floors are below ground level.

Game Loot Boxes That Have Been “Manipulative” Have Been Blasted.

0

Consumer groups representing 18 countries from August 2019 signed a letter calling for the unbundling of loot boxes from video games as “a form of abuse.”

The contents of the virtual boxes are revealed only through either game play or by making a payment.

Some apps contain useful tools or desirable extras which improve the experience, while others are worthless.

According to the report authors, the Norwegian Consumer Council (NCC), gamers are being manipulated into spending large sums of money on the chests.

EA, a video game publisher, has previously compared loot boxes to children’s toys Hatchimals or Kinder Surprise.

Critics argue that the boxes are a form of gambling because players cannot see what they have bought until after they have paid to open them.

Finn Myrstad, director of digital policy at the NCC, said: “Loot boxes are often sold to consumers as if they were a normal form of in-game purchases and their presentation involves exploiting addictive mechanisms and targeting vulnerable consumer groups.”

The report is supported by 20 consumer groups in 18 countries, who are calling for governments to take action through regulation.

The European Consumer Organisation is an umbrella organization that represents consumers in Europe – including those in the United Kingdom.

The report says that the systems used to convince people to part with their money in games are “predatory,” “manipulative,” and “exceedingly aggressive.”

It adds that the fact that some games containing loot boxes are targeted at children makes these problems worse.

Banned in Belgium

There is a controversy over whether loot boxes constitute gambling.

In 2018, Belgium’s Gaming Commission ruled that loot boxes in popular video games violated gambling laws. This led to EA Sports removing the virtual currency from its FIFA series in that region. As a result, players can only earn loot boxes by playing the Ultimate Team mode.

In 2019, Netherlands came to the same conclusion as Belgium and hit Fifa’s publisher EA with a €10m (£8.5m) fine.

A court overturned the decision in March 2022, when it found that EA had not broken the law, and rescinded the fine.

Loot boxes, which contain digital versions of actual football players who can then play for FIFA gamers’ teams, add an element of chance to the Ultimate Team mode. However, they only form part of a broader game of skill.

In 2019, a vice president of the game publisher Electronic Arts defended the company’s use of loot boxes, telling members of Parliament that they were just like Kinder Eggs.

Kerry Hopkins, Director of Consumer Insights at Electronic Arts, said: “We have implemented these kinds of mechanics in our games—FIFA Ultimate Team and packs—in a way that we think is ethical and enjoyable to people.”

In 2018, Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, decided to let players in its hit video game see what was inside its loot boxes before deciding whether to buy them.

In the UK, there are plans to introduce a review into whether gambling regulation is fit for the digital age. In 2020, loot boxes are set to be firmly regulated as “games of chance” by the House of Lords Gambling Committee.

The Latest Round Of EU Sanctions Refers To A Ban On The Import Of Russian Crude Oil By 2022.

0

On Monday, the leaders of the European Council announced that the European Union would ban 90% of Russian oil imports by the end of the year.

Russian oil delivered by tankers will be banned, while an exemption will be made for the southern segment of the Druzhba pipeline, reported European Council President Ursula von der Leyen.

The northern segment of the pipeline serves Poland and Germany, with both countries agreeing to the embargo. The southern part goes to Hungary, Slovakia and Czech Republic. Von der Leyen said an exception was made for the southern segment of the pipeline, which accounts for 10% of imports on Russian oil.

“We have a clear political statement by Poland and Germany that they will wind down Russian oil imports until the end of the year. We have covered 90% of Russian oil being wound down during this time frame. Leftover is the roundabout 10 or 11% that is covered by southern Druzhba pipeline. We have agreed for the moment an exemption,” German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said.

EU leaders are scheduled to meet again on Thursday to discuss details of the oil embargo and other sanctions.

The European Council has agreed that the sixth package of sanctions against Russia will cover crude oil, as well as petroleum products, delivered from Russia into member states, with a temporary exception for crude oil delivered by pipeline.

The European Council will consider the issue of the temporary exception for crude oil delivered by pipeline again as soon as possible.

Alternatives to Russian supply

Von der Leyen said it would be possible to increase usage of the Adria oil pipeline in Croatia to supply oil to Hungary without Russia. She added that Hungary’s refineries would need to be updated to accommodate oil from Croatia, which would also allow Hungary to decrease its Russian oil imports.

“It is a big step forward what we did today,” von der Leyen said. “Because we have now gotten rid of coal – and this was already very difficult. Now we basically have the political agreement, how to phase out oil in a clear timeframe.”

Some context:

Earlier this month when the European Union proposed a ban on Russian oil imports, it stopped short of sanctioning Russia’s natural gas exports. According to Rystad Energy, Russia’s natural gas exports are predicted to generate about $79 billion in tax revenues for Moscow this year.

Russia recently stopped supplying gas to several European countries, including the Netherlands, Poland, Finland and Bulgaria. The move came after those countries refused to accept payment for the gas in rubles.

The Department Of Justice Will Review The Effectiveness Of The Police Response To The Uvalde School Shooting.

0

The Justice Department has announced that it is conducting a review of the law enforcement response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 students and two teachers dead.

The U.S. Department of Justice will conduct a Critical Incident Review to determine whether law enforcement in Uvalde, Texas, followed proper procedures during the response to a mass shooting on May 24, DOJ spokesman Anthony Coley said in a statement.

A person is expected to be chosen in the next few days, two sources familiar with the process tell CNN.

The Justice Department has traditionally relied on individuals outside the DOJ with law enforcement expertise and on-the-ground experience with mass-casualty events to conduct reviews into such incidents.

The Department of Homeland Security has previously conducted after-action reviews following mass shootings at the San Bernardino Inland Regional Center in California in December 2015 and at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in June 2016.

Law Enforcement Under Intense Scrutiny

The Texas officials and law enforcement have come under intense scrutiny for their handling of the shooting.

The massacre, the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, has been followed by conflicting official accounts of how it unfolded. The delayed police confrontation with the mass shooter has compounded parents’ anger, with some saying a quicker response could have saved children’s lives.

After the Columbine school shooting of 1999, law enforcement agencies began training their officers to stop active shooters as quickly as possible and even bypass helping injured victims. However, CNN has reported that the response by law enforcement in Uvalde ran contrary to these tactics while the gunman was inside an adjoining classroom. While the gunman was inside, a group of 19 law enforcement officers stood outside the classroom for roughly 50 minutes as they waited for room keys and tactical equipment.

In a Friday interview, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said he is demanding a full accounting of what happened during the school shooting, saying that he had been misled by law enforcement officials leading the investigation into the attack.

At a news conference in Uvalde, Gov. Rick Perry said: “My expectation is that law enforcement leaders will get to the bottom of every fact with absolute certainty.”

The Justice Department is conducting a review of law enforcement actions and responses that day in an effort to provide an independent account of the incident and identify lessons learned and best practices to help first responders be prepared for future active shooter events.

The Justice Department will conduct an after-action review of the response to a mass shooting, the department’s top civil rights official said Monday. The review will be conducted with the Department’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. As with prior Justice Department after-action reviews of mass shootings and other critical incidents, this assessment will be fair, transparent, and independent. The Justice Department will publish a report with its findings at the conclusion of its review.

Joe Biden Visited Uvalde

The Department of Justice announced on April 10 that it would investigate the circumstances surrounding the high school shooting in Texas. The announcement came the same day that President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden traveled to Uvalde, where they visited a makeshift memorial to the 21 victims outside Robb Elementary School. The President and first lady also met with family members of the young victims and first responders during their visit to Texas.

Attorney General Merrick Garland spoke briefly about the massacre at Sunday’s Harvard commencement ceremony, telling graduates: “As we gather today to celebrate this milestone in your life, we are also holding on to an enormous amount of grief because of yet another mass shooting at another school in our country.”

In Uvalde, Texas, an unspeakable act of violence has devastated families and an entire community. Garland said he felt the tragedy was too awful to be described with mere words.
