The relationship between Liam Payne and Zayn Malik appears to be problematic.
In an impromptu interview on the podcast Impaulsive with Logan Paul, Payne was asked about his relationship with former One Direction bandmate Zayn Malik. Malik, who was dating model Gigi Hadid at the time, had previously gotten into a feud with Jake Paul, brother of social media star Logan Paul. At the time, Hadid had referred to her boyfriend as a “respectful king.”
In a recent interview, Payne seemed to allude to the bad split between Hadid and Malik last year. “She tweeted something about get yourself a respectful man or something,” Payne said during the podcast. “That one didn’t age very well.” Last year Malik pleaded no contest to charges of harassment after an alleged dispute with Hadid’s mother, Yolanda Hadid.
In 2015, Malik left One Direction to pursue a solo career, and the band’s remaining four members— Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson—did the same. “There are many reasons why I dislike Zayn and there are many reasons why I will always be on his side,” Payne said on the podcast. “If I had had to go through what he went through—with his growth and whatever else,” Payne said. “My parents are overly supportive to the point where it’s annoying at times.”
Payne said he does not “agree with any of his actions,” but said he too has been “misunderstood.”
He said he understands why some people are opposed to the death penalty. “What I can say is I understand and your only hope is that at some point in their life, the person at the other end of the phone wants to receive the help that you’re willing to give them,” he added.
